Human factors assessment

Human Factors, which focus on the interactions between human operators, support machines and working environment, are paramount in the design and assessment of technical, operational and procedural ATM systems, since not only they refer to safety but also the system efficiency and usability depend on them.

The introduction of a new concept in ATM requires therefore often the development of a Human Factor case that ADV Systems perfectly masters.

The Human Factors case, complementary to a Safety Case, helps notably to ensure that a proposed system:

  • Complements human abilities,
  • Mitigates and compensates for human limitations
  • Meets human needs
  • Delivers optimal performance.

This process, generally based on expert assessment, identifies Human Factors issues and analyses their potential impact and mitigation. It addresses various Human Factors issues relative to: workload, ergonomics, Human Machine Interaction, working methods, training, procedures, attention management, acceptance of the system, trust in the system, situation awareness, etc.

ADV prepares Human Factor cases in accordance with the EUROCONTROL Agency Human Factors Case Guidance material, through the following steps:

ADV Systems has for example carried out HF cases in the framework of:

  • The development of a guidance system for vehicle drivers on airport site;
  • The application of reduced wake turbulence separation between departures under cross-wind operations;
